scavenging

The stimuli that elicit disgust -
the gooeyness of mucus,
the smell of rotting flesh,
the colour of pus -
usually do so because
on a subconscious level,
they remind us of our mortality.
Disgust is a physiological, protective response
to that which could threaten our life.

It is kismet,
that my work would evolve
into a fascination with death,
both materially and mentally.
I needed to create a vision
of the delicate and complex embrace
between death and victory.

I took on the role of scavenger.

Scoured dinner plates and kitchen sinks,
fresh food markets and roadside grasses.
Intentionally subverting the value of waste,
mirroring the artist’s defiance of death.

She wears her pain proudly, fiercely.
She walked through death,
and emerged transformed,
reborn,  a l i v e.
A crown
to honour an artist’s wrestle
with mental health and
celebrate her victorious emergence from depression.

Created to accompany the musical expression of Narelle’s journey.
